Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, founder of the HCG diet, based his findings on clear clinical observations and scientific experimentation. He pinpointed the controller of our eating impulses and thus our natural bodily regulation of calories to the hypothalamus buried deep within our brain. This vital center of activity controls almost every impulse from sex to food, but it is subject to pressures from us human beings that order it to perform in ways detrimental to our well-being, but in ways that we will upon ourselves by our emotions and choices in life. In a sense, the hypothalamus is at our beck and call, which is how we get into trouble.

Let's then take a look at what Dr. Simeons calls the three causes of obesity.

The first is our emotions, or what Dr. Simeons calls the psychological aspects of obesity. Here, for instance, if we can't find emotional satisfaction in our work or human relationships, we may turn to food to provide the gratification we're seeking. The hypothalamus responds by giving us hunger pangs so we can find emotional comfort through eating. Result: too many calories and a fat build-up through an endless cycle of hunger and satisfaction.

The second is compulsive eating, but Dr. Simeons assigns this to only 1 or 2 percent of all overweight persons. Again, he sees compulsive eating, rare though it may be, as a substitute for other emotional satisfaction, particularly of the sexual kind.

The final cause of obesity, according to Dr. Simeons, is a reluctance to lose weight. He posits that people become attached, so to speak, to their extra weight and assign a sort of pride to it, especially if they are successful in the other aspects of their lives, such as earning a good living. He writes: "Some [people] have a feeling that reducing means giving up an almost cherished and intimate part of themselves."

Some of Dr. Simeons's ideas may sound a bit outdated to us, but regardless of his theories, what he proposed for a solution to excess fat works so long as we stick to his protocol.

Since Dr. Simeons correctly named the hypothalamus as the controller of our impulses, and thus the controller of our eating habits and weight, it is his use of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) that provides the key to overcoming obesity, or even just shedding some extra pounds. Dr. Simeons in his day 60 years ago used injectable HCG to control the hypothalamus, but since then the HCG has been synthesized into diet drops, which are taken three times a day.

These HCG drops control the hypothalamus so that, when we commence a very low calorie (VLC) diet of 500 calories a day, the body doesn't sense starvation, thereby forcing us to eat more. Instead, guided by the hypothalamus, the body naturally burns the excess fat that we've accumulated and leaves us feeling satisfied by our food intake.

Since excess weight can lead to all kinds of other physical problems, including type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, back and joint pain and more, losing weight is the single most beneficial thing we can do for ourselves and our health.
